What is John Company: Second Edition about?
This cutting negotiation game about high society at the dawn of the British Empire charts the rise and fall of the East India Company. Cole Wehrle designed John Company: Second Edition, a deep and thoughtful historical game from a master designer.
Using positions of power and utilizing them to benefit their own interests, players control the fate of John Company. As players make their way through the Company’s ranks, they’ll be directing critical trade missions, bribing members of Parliament, and competing for marriages that will benefit them.
John Company provides its players with an unparalleled economic sandbox covering the Company’s history from 1710 to 1857. After players become comfortable with the game’s first scenario, they can explore a wide range of challenges, including the end of the Company’s monopoly and the growth of enterprising private firms.
In spite of its massive scope, John Company relies on a fundamentally simple core that teaches players how to play as they go. In turns, players assign their children to different career paths and then proceed to operate the company step by step. There’s almost no downtime between actions since players can always negotiate.
