How to Play Blank Slate Rules if you hate rulebooks

The overview page of Blank Slate introduces you to the game through a summary of the gameplay and videos shared by other gamers.

Goal

Match the answer of exactly one other player to finish the Word Cues and gain points.

Scoring:

  • If exactly two players write the same word, each earns 3 points.
  • If more than two players write the same word, each earns 1 point.
  • All other players get 0 points.

Winning Condition: The first player to reach 25 points wins.

Gameplay

Setup

  • Lay out the Score Board.
  • Each player chooses a Slate and writes their name on the score board in the matching color bar.
  • Choose the first Selector.
Layout the board

Selector Phase

Selector picks a word cue card
  • Selector picks a Word Cue card from the draw side of the box.
  • Reads it aloud and places it face-up on the table.

Answer Phase

Blank Slate Answer Phase
  • Each player predicts a word that only one other player would choose.
  • Players write down their chosen word.
  • Reveal words one-by-one, starting with the person to the left of the Selector.

Scoring

  • 3 points for pairs of matching words.
  • 1 point for words matched by more than two players.
  • 0 points for unmatched words.
  • Mark scores on the Score Board.

Rotation and Winning:

  • Place the used Word Cue card in the discard side of the box.
  • Pass the box to the left; the next person becomes the Selector.
  • Continue until a player reaches 25 points, who then wins.

Steps on filling in the blanks

There are just a few small guidelines for what counts as acceptable answers for Word Cues:

  • Single-letter additions are no good!
  • Adding just a syllable is okay if you can still hear the root word.
  • It’s okay to have either a compound word or a two-word phrase; both are acceptable.
  • Proper nouns are acceptable, as long as you still write just one word.
