How to Play Captain Flip Rules if you hate rulebooks

The Captain Flip overview introduces you to the game through a summary of the gameplay and videos shared by other gamer.

Goal of the Game

  • Play as Pirate Captains.
  • Recruit a crew.
  • Collect coins.
  • Captain with the most coins at the end wins

Setup

Place all Character tiles in the bag.Place Coins and Treasure Map in the center of the table.Randomly give an Adventure board A to each player.

  • Include the board with a Pirate Flag for the starting player.
  • For future games, agree on using Adventure boards A, B, C, or D.

Place a Player Aid between each player.

  • One side explains the 9 Characters.
  • Other side details the effects of each board.

Gameplay

Turns proceed clockwise, starting with the player with the pirate flag board.On your turn, follow these 4 steps:

  1. Randomly draw 1 Character tile from the bag, only seeing one side.
  2. Choose to keep or flip the Character tile (if flipped, you must keep the new Character).
  3. Place the Character on the lowest empty space of any column on your board.
  4. Apply the Character’s immediate effect, if any.

If the Character is on the highest space of any column, apply their immediate bonus, if any.Example: Lily places the Parrot on her board, immediately draws, and plays a new tile (following the flip rule).

About the Tiles

  • The 9 Characters have either:
    • Immediate effect
    • Endgame effect
    • Both
  • Box Colors:
    • Yellow: Apply effect immediately after placing the tile.
    • Gray: Apply effect at the end of the game.
  • Special Symbols:
    • Cartographer: Sextant symbol (interacts with Navigator).
    • Gunner: Bomb symbol (interacts with Carpenter).

About the Board

Adjacency:

  • Spaces A & B are adjacent.
  • Spaces C & D are not adjacent (diagonal).
  • Spaces E & F are not adjacent (space between them).

Empty Spaces:

  • Rows can have empty spaces.

Column Placement:

  • Columns do not need to start on the bottom row.

Bonuses:

  • Spaces marked with X are immediate bonuses

End of Game

Complete the round when a player finishes four columns on their board.

  • First player is identified by the Pirate Flag on their Adventure board.
  • Last player is seated to the right of the first player.
  • If the last player completes the fourth column, the game ends immediately.

Apply endgame effects of each Character.

  • For board C, also apply endgame bonuses of covered spaces.

Score one column at a time, from left to right.The player with the most coins wins.In case of a tie:

  • Player with the Treasure Map wins.
  • Otherwise, tied players share the victory.
