How to play Dixit if you hate reading rulebooks

I hate rulebooks! This condensed How to Play Dixit rules help players get the essential instructions without having to trawl rulebooks.

The Dixit game overview page introduces you to the game through a summary of the gameplay and videos shared by other gamers.

Game Setup

  • Choose a game piece and place it on the starting space of the scoreboard.
  • Shuffle the deck and deal 6 cards to each player. Remaining cards form the draw pile.
  • Voting tokens:
    • 4 players: 4 tokens (1 to 4).
    • 5 players: 5 tokens (1 to 5).
    • 6 players: 6 tokens (1 to 6).

Turns of the Game

  1. Role of the Active Player
    • One player is the active player.
    • Choose a card and give a clue (word, sentence, sound, etc.) without revealing the card.
    • First active player is the first to give a clue.
  2. Role of the Other Players
    • Other players choose a card from their hand that matches the clue.
    • Hand selected cards to the active player without showing them to others.
  3. Revealing the Cards
    • Active player shuffles all received cards with their own.
    • Reveal cards on numbered spaces of the scoreboard.
  4. Voting and Identifying the Active Player’s Card
    • Players guess which card belongs to the active player.
    • Vote in secret by placing the corresponding voting token face down.
    • Players cannot vote for their own card.
  5. Revealing the Votes
    • Turn voting tokens face up and place them on the chosen cards.
    • Active player reveals their card.
  6. Scoring
    • All players find the active player’s card:
      • Active player: 0 points
      • Other players: 2 points
    • No players find the active player’s card:
      • Active player: 0 points
      • Other players: 2 points (+1 bonus point per vote for their card)
    • At least one, but not all, find the active player’s card:
      • Active player: 3 points
      • Other players: 3 points for correct guesses + 1 bonus point per vote for their card.
  7. Advancing Along the Scoreboard
    • Move game pieces according to points earned.
    • Scoring rules overview is on the scoreboard.
  8. End of Turn
    • Discard used cards.
    • Draw new cards to refill hands to 6.
    • Next active player is to the left of the last active player.

End of the Game

  • Game ends when a player reaches 30 points or draws the last card.
  • Player with the most points wins.

Changes for 3 Players

  • Players have 7 cards instead of 6.
  • Each player takes 5 voting tokens (1 to 5).
  • After the clue, the other 2 players hand 2 cards each to the active player.
  • Reveal 5 cards.
  • Voting and scoring rules remain unchanged.
  • Refill hands to 7 cards at the end of the turn.
