Shut the Box Gameplay in Simple Steps

Shut the Box is a versatile game that can be played with any number of players, but it is most enjoyable with two to four.

You take turns rolling the dice, aiming to shut down as many numbers as possible.

Roll dice into the box

  • On your turn, roll the dice into the box.
  • If the total of remaining tile(s) is 6 or below, roll one die. Otherwise, roll both dice
  • Shut one of any combination of open numbers that equals the total number of the dice roll 

For example, if you roll a 6, you may shut either 6; 1 and 5; 2 and 4 or 1, 2, and 3 as long as the numbers are available.

Alternate Shutting rules

You only shut the total of the dice roll, or either/both numbers showing on the dice.
For example, if a player rolls 2 and 4, the player may shut either 2 and/or 4, or 6).

Continue to roll to shut the tiles 

You roll the dice again and shut more numbers until your dice roll does not allow you to shut any more numbers.

Score and end turn

  • You score the total of uncovered numbers.
  • End your turn and pass the dice to the next plwyer

How do you win?

The player with the lowest score wins after each player has taken a turn.

“Shut the Box”

If you successfully close all the numbers, you “SHUT THE BOX” and immediately win and the game ends.
