Game Setup

  • Start with:
    • 1 silver coin
    • 2 workers
    • 3 random goods tiles (placed next to your player board)
  • Place a castle tile on any burgundy castle space in your duchy:
    • Side 33 for beginning players
    • Side 34 for advanced players
  • No restriction on the number of different types of goods you may collect
  • Use the white die in addition to your color’s dice and playing pieces
  • Place your victory point marker on the start space of the victory point track
  • Place your turn order marker as the “target victory point marker” on space 50 of the victory point track
  • Follow 2-player game setup instructions, using the appropriate side of the board

Playing the Game

  • Play 25 rounds
  • Beginning of Each Round:
    • Roll all 3 dice
    • Place the topmost goods tile on the depot indicated by the white die
    • Remove a hex tile from that depot (top to bottom). If the depot is empty, remove from the next depot in clockwise order
    • Perform your 2 die actions as usual
  • Scoring Adjustments:
    • Expand to other regions via the rivers only
    • Placing a Ship:
      • Take all goods from a chosen depot, then remove all other goods from all depots
      • Option to exchange any 5 goods tiles for a hex tile from the central black depot (placed face down on a key space)
      • A black hex tile can be placed on any color space in your duchy but has no other effect
    • Monastery Tiles: Score victory points immediately after placing
    • Completing a Color: No victory point bonus; instead, choose a hex tile from the black depot and place it in your duchy, applying its effects
    • Victory Points:
      • Advance your marker as usual
      • You may buy additional victory points (1 silver coin per point)
      • Upon reaching the target victory point marker:
        • Reset your marker to the start space (lose any excess points)
        • Decrease the target marker by 5 spaces (minimum 5 points)
        • Perform a die action of your choice immediately after resetting

End of the Game

  • Win by filling all 37 hex spaces of your duchy within 25 rounds
  • Adjust difficulty by setting the initial target victory point marker:
    • Lower than 50 for easier game
    • Higher than 50 for more challenging game
  • Reduce the target marker by 5 points each time you reset it
