Spirit Island Board Game Review

Spirit Island is a cooperative game about defending your island home from Invaders. You and your teammates are spirits of the land and each has unique powers. Every turn, you simultaneously choose which of your power cards you wish to pay energy to play. Through power card combinations, you obtain free bonus effects. There are powers that take effect immediately before the Invaders spread and attack, while others can be slower, requiring tactical planning for effective use.

During the game, spirits gain energy, decide how and when to Grow: to reclaim used power cards, to obtain new power, or to expand their presence in the island.

The Invaders attack the island in a semi-predictable manner. They explore into some lands, and later, form settlements and cities. They then ravage there, bringing blight and attack native islanders present on the land.

The islanders defend against the Invaders when attacked, and help the spirits. However, it is not always as exactly as planned. Some Powers work using the islanders, helping them push out the Invaders or clean the land of blight.

Winning requires destroying every last settlement and city on the board. The more fear you send to the Invaders, victory becomes easier. They will retreat even if there are settlements and cities remaining. The team loses if any spirit is destroyed, if the island is overrun by blight, or if the Invader card deck is depleted before achieving victory.
