What is the goal of 7 Stud Poker?

For Seven Card Stud, each player receives seven cards, but the best five-card poker hand for each player determines the winner.

Seven Stud Poker Player Actions

Players typically have the following action options:

Call

Match the previous player’s bet.

Check

Choose not to bet and pass to the next player in turn to bet.

Raise

Increase the amount of the previous player’s bet by limits set in the game.

Fold

Throw your cards away. You are out of the hand. You lose whatever you have bet previously into the pot and can no longer take any actions.

Seven Stud Poker Setup

Ante

All players ante before the game begins (the exact amount depends on the game). This is the cost of being in the hand.

Third Street

There are three cards dealt to each player, two hidden hole cards and one face up.
In this game, the player with the lowest exposed card is the ‘bring-in’.
A nominal bet must be made (the exact amount depends on the game) or, if they choose, the lower betting increment must be bet.
In this round, the action moves clockwise, with players choosing to raise, call or fold.

Fourth Street

The players now receive a fourth exposed card.
The player whose exposed cards have the highest poker ranking
value acts first. The player may either check or bet the lower limit stake. The action continues clockwise.

Fifth Street

Now each player receives a fifth exposed card.
Similar to the previous round, the player whose exposed cards have the highest poker ranking
value acts first, who may either check or bet the higher limit stake. The action continues clockwise.

Sixth Street

Now each player receives a sixth exposed card. Similar to the previous round, the player whose exposed cards have the highest poker ranking
value acts first, who may either check or bet the higher limit stake. The action continues clockwise.

Seventh Street (or the River)

A seventh and final card is dealt face-down to each player, which is known only to that player. The first player to act is the individual whose exposed cards have the highest poker value. There is a final betting round, and if more than one player remains, we reach the Showdown.

The Showdown

When the final betting round has completed, the last bettor or raiser will show their cards first.
Seat 1 shows its cards first, followed by Seat 2, and so on, if there was no bet on the final round.
Showdown hands are exposed clockwise around the table.
A five-card poker hand is won by the player with the best hand.
Poker pots are divided equally if the best hands are identical.
Upon awarding the pot, a new game commences.
