Iota Game Rules FAQs

  • What is the game Iota?

Iota is a card game where a starting card is placed on the table, and players take turns to add cards to cards in the play area. Before cards can be added,  the card properties must fulfil certain rules. You score points based on the card line you created or extended.

  • What makes up a line in Iota?

A line is made up of 2, 3 or 4 cards straight in a row or column, and each individual property (color, shape and number) is the same on each card or different on each card.

  • What is a Lot in Iota?

A 4 card line in Iota is called a LOT. Creating one doubles your score for the turn.

  • How do you score in Iota?

After each turn, sum up the card face values in each line created or extended on your turn. Count twice for cards that are part of 2 lines. Double points for each completed Lot and double again if you play all 4 of your cards.

Guidelines for adding cards in Iota

  • When playing a card, you must connect it in a single straight line, and at least one must connect to the grid.
  • You may also create or extend additional lines
  • You may create or extend a line by adding cards to both ends of it
  • For each line, all cards must either be all the same or all different in each individual property: color, shape, and number.

Wild Card

A Wild card substitutes for any other card and has a face value of 0 points. You may replace a Wild card in play before your turn by exchanging it with a card from your hand that fits any line(s) it is part of. You may then replay it on any turn. You do not have
to name a Wild card when you play it but it must represent the same card if part
of two lines .

Creating a LOT

Iota 2

A 4 card line is called a LOT. Creating one doubles your score for the turn.
There is a maximum of four cards per line. A gap is not a line, and some spaces on the grid cannot be filled.
