Find out about Scattergories

What is the goal? #

The objective of Scattergories is to score points by being the only person to name objects within a set of categories.

Game setup #

A die with all letters will be rolled to randomly select a letter for the first list.

All players will write that letter at the top of the list that will be played with the group. All players must agree to use the same list.

Gameplay #

Set a timer for 3 minutes.

In this time, each player must think of and write down, in the first column of the pad, a word or term that starts with the rolled letter and fits each of the 12 categories.

Any number of words in the answer is allowed as long as the first word starts with the correct letter.

For instance:

The category is “Vegetable” with a letter of “C”. Words such as:

  • Cauliflower
  • Carrot
  • Collard Greens

are acceptable, but “Broccoli” is not (wrong initial letter), nor is “Citrus” (wrong category).

Writing a bad answer however, is still better than no answer as there is still the possibility that the group playing will accept it. For example, \”Citrus\” is considered a vegetable in the sense when its being referred to the entire plant kingdom. All players are to stop writing when the timer is up.

Scoring #

After the timer is up, in turn, each player read their answer for each category.

  • If you and another play have the same answer, you score zero points.
  • You score one point for an answer no player has given.

You cannot have more than one answer on a line for each number.

If for some reason a player thinks that someone\’s answer does not fit in the category, a player may choose to challenge that answer. When challenged, all players vote on the validity of that answer.

  • If the vote is a tie, the vote of the player who is being challenged is thrown out.
  • In the case of general categories, board interpretation is allowed for fun and creative game play.

Tally scores at the bottom of the list.

At the end of the game, players add up the points in each round to determine a winner.

The die will be rolled again to determine the next round\’s letter, and players will proceed to the next list.
